HashCam launches trust-less technology that proves the authenticity of photos and videos before they are shared - 03/02/2025

At a time when AI-generated images and deepfakes are becoming increasingly difficult to distinguish from real photos and videos, trust in the source alone is no longer sufficient. The question is no longer who shares the content, but whether the image itself can be proven authentic.

HashCam, a Belgian innovation, introduces a new standard for visual authenticity. The technology seals photos and videos at the moment they are captured, before they are shared or received. Their authenticity is recorded on the blockchain and can be independently verified by anyone — without intermediaries.

“In Belgium, we trust itsme® to prove our identity. But until now, no such reliable system existed for photos and videos. HashCam applies that principle to visual evidence: you no longer need to trust the creator, only the proof.”

— Sebastiaan de Voogd, Founder of HashCam

Authenticity without trust

Where traditional verification relies on reputation or trust in the source, HashCam is trustless by design.

Each photo or video is cryptographically sealed at the moment of creation and linked to objective metadata, including:

> the exact time of capture

> location

> contextual data from the device and environment

> depth analysis of the visual material

Together, these elements form a unique digital fingerprint that is recorded on a public blockchain. With a single click, anyone can later verify whether the image is original and whether it has been altered.

Privacy by design

HashCam is built with privacy as a core principle. All images and metadata remain locally on the user’s device. The only data that leaves the device is a hash — a non-reversible cryptographic code that cannot be used to reconstruct a photo or video.

A foundational building block for visual evidence

HashCam does not function as a social platform or storage service, but as an authentication layer for visual content. The technology can be broadly applied in sectors where trust in visual material is critical:

> Journalism & media — verifiable source material

> Forensic investigations — technically provable digital evidence

> Insurance — objective documentation of damage claims

> Sustainability claims — objective recording of progress

> Business & compliance — support for AI regulation and transparency requirements

> Consumers — documenting incorrect deliveries, use of the DashCam feature

“Today, HashCam is already being used by the Ghent-based company Go Forest to make tree planting verifiable and auditable for customers and partners. It shows how this technology replaces trust with verifiable proof.”

— Sebastiaan de Voogd, Founder of HashCam
